God Is Still Our Protector

Sometimes we don’t see how, but God steps in and covers us in ways beyond our understanding. Years ago, I heard a testimony of how God turned a young man’s enemies’ vision into seeing a lion instead of him. Recently, I experienced something similar in Atlantis — a man saw me and my colleague not as ordinary workers, but as “agents with big guns and black suits.” That day, I was reminded that God still protects His people in ways we can’t imagine.

God Still Protects His People

When I was younger and sitting in church, one of the things I loved most was listening to people’s testimonies. They always reminded me that God is alive, real, and still working in people’s lives today.

One testimony, in particular, stayed with me for years.

Our youth leaders once shared the story of a young man who was dating a girl in Colorado Park. He lived in either Woodlands or Westridge—I can’t remember exactly—but on one particular night, he had to walk home while the gang fights in the area were raging.

As he walked through Woodlands, he approached one of those narrow alleyways between the houses. Suddenly, he heard a voice tell him to crawl through. Confused, because he was alone, he decided to obey the voice.

As he crawled, he noticed five or six men standing at the end of the passage. It seemed like they were waiting to attack anyone who walked through. But then something incredible happened—they suddenly shouted, “Leeuw! Leeuw!” (Lion! Lion!)

What they saw wasn’t a man crawling, but a lion making its way through the passage. God had blinded their eyes and shifted their vision. That young man walked away unharmed.

I carried that testimony in my heart for years, not knowing that one day I would experience something similar myself.

My Own Encounter

Years later, while working as a field technician, I was sent to Atlantis for a fibre job. I arrived at the spot first, and a colleague messaged me asking where I was. When I told him, he replied, “You’re brave to stand there alone. We’re waiting for security at the Engen garage on the N7.”

I turned to my assistant and said, “We’re here, let’s just start.” I got out of the bakkie while he stayed seated with the door open. As I bent down to open a manhole, I suddenly got this strong feeling to look behind me.

A man was walking toward me, his hands hidden behind his back. I turned to face him directly. He immediately shifted his stance, hid whatever was in his hands, and began saying:

“Wat doen hier in Atlantis? Sekere agents met sekere groot guns met swart suits.”
(“What are you doing here in Atlantis? Surely you must be agents with big guns in black suits.”)

I froze for a moment. Here I was in my reflector jacket, denim overall jeans, and a Glam key in my back pocket. My colleague was wearing just a T-shirt and jeans with blue and red spray paint stains and holes.

Yet this man didn’t see two ordinary workers. He saw something entirely different. To him, we looked like armed agents in black suits.

He eventually walked past us, hands now visible, and went on his way.

When I climbed back into the bakkie, my assistant asked what he had said. I brushed it off, but deep down I knew exactly what had just happened.

The Lesson

God had given me the same type of experience I had carried in my heart since that youth testimony years before.

Just as He changed the vision of the men who saw a lion in Woodlands, He changed the vision of the man in Atlantis who thought we were heavily armed agents.

The truth is this: God is still protecting His people today in ways we can’t always see or understand. Sometimes He doesn’t remove the danger, but He changes the way the enemy sees us.

That day, I walked away with a renewed faith. And I hope my story encourages you to believe that God is still your protector too.

“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
